The IndyCar Series was the first auto racing series to use ethanol, back in 2006, putting it at the forefront of the thrust for renewable and environmentally responsible fuel. In 2009, the series will continue to use 100 percent fuel-grade ethanol, denatured with 2 percent gasoline.
On November 18, 2008, Apex-Brasil (the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency) signed an agreement with IndyCar Series and became its official Energy and Trade Partner, encompassing energy, promotion and trade between Brazil and the United States, involving 65 economy sectors, ranging from agriculture to health and technology.
The partnership includes cooperation from UNICA (the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association) to identify companies interested in supplying ethanol to the series. One of the primary messages of the partnership is that regardless of sources – corn, sugarcane or cellulosic materials in the future – the end product is a clean, renewable bio-fuel that reduces dependence on fossil fuels and combats one of the major causes of climate change.
